My friend Cristina Gauthier posted this on her facebook, and I really would like this to get the attention it deserves. I value her opinion, not only because she is my friend but because she has made a case on being open minded all her life. She has lived in three countries and speaks three languages, she was trying to help poor people in the north of Brasil and trying to bring environmentally friendly engineering to Puerto Rico among other amazing things….
Please reblog/share if you can and if you care.
"The president of the Institute of International Education has balls of steel telling me (the only "non-white" person in the room) that "Minorities don’t exist anymore". Either balls of steel or his ignorance and bigotry are just too strong to even make the slightest of reason.
Not to mention the brilliant treasurer:
-“You would probably feel comfortable being in California.”
-“No, I’m not Mexican. They have a big Mexican population, not Puertorican.”
-“Oh, well, you’re just splitting hairs now.”
I am proud of myself for responding without telling both of them that their deaths will make for a better world.
Six months in one of the most powerful/diverse cities in the world have taught me that racism is not even close to ending. Most shit (not all, but most) is run by white, bigoted, affluent, men.
I am NOT a controversial person, I don’t tend to publish long rants on Facebook, but I must say “opportunities” to “increase” minority participation offered by the US Department of State are bullshit. They seem to be merely looking for a certain type of individual that best serves white, bigoted, upper east side interests.
I wanted to let EVERYONE know that this happened. These things were really said by the president and treasurer of one of the most powerful institutes to “promote diversity”. I am sure this will close thousands of doors in my future but I feel that I can’t keep quiet. Posting this is my little, invisible, insignificant act towards justice.”
